DIGITAL WELLNESS & INTEGRITY

This month for West U Wellness we’re highlighting Digital Wellness and Integrity.

September is a great month to introduce some new small changes we can make in our daily routines to help yield big changes for our overall health and wellness! Encourage screen-free play dates, agree as a family on screen-free times of the day (dinner?) and zones in your home (bedrooms?), and try charging your own phone across the room instead of right next to your bed. We encourage everyone to try to find a few more minutes of your day to power down our devices to power up our brains and relationships.

To support these conversations and actions at home, we recommend a few read-alouds:

Unplugged by Steve Antony

Goodnight iPad by Ann Droyd

When Charlie McButton Lost Power by Suzanne Collins

Tek: The Modern Cave Boy by Patrick McDonnell

For the adults, if you want to learn more about digital wellness, check out:

Raising Humans in a Digital World by Diana Graber

The Tech-Wise Family by Andy Crouch

About West U Wellness

West U Wellness is a school-wide initiative at West University Elementary, co-led by counselor Becky Sodaberg and Dr. Elizabeth Miller, that fosters the health and well-being of students, staff, and families. By weaving physical, emotional, technological, and social wellness into daily school life, the program helps children thrive through nutrition education, mindfulness practices, movement, and community-wide events.

The goal is to cultivate lifelong healthy habits, provide students, parents, and teachers with practical tools, and create a culture where wellness is part of both learning and growing together. Through this initiative, West U Wellness empowers students and families to strengthen resilience, practice balance, and prioritize self-care, building a foundation of wellness that supports the entire school community.
