​What is Name That Book?
Name That Book is an HISD-based reading competition designed to encourage students to read classic literature, current award-winning fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels. Participants read and discuss 25 books, depending on the year. A selected team will later compete in a district-wide competition that tests students’ ability to identify books from quotes. The team that names the most books wins!
What is the competition like?
In the spring semester of 2026 there will be a competition where the selected student teams are placed together and presented with direct book quotes They are allowed 1 minute to quietly discuss and present the book that represents the right answer. This requires intense concentration and cooperation between team members with quiet, healthy discussions.
Time commitments:
Both PK-2 and 3-5 book club are inclusive of all who want to participate. Later in the year, a tryout will take place for the competition team that will compete at the district competition. Once the school year begins, we will receive more information regarding the competition date and will host an informational meeting and share proposed club meeting dates. If you are interested in participating in either the PK-2 book club or the 3-5 book club please fill out the appropriate interest form above.

*Pre-K students are invited to participate in PK-2 book club but will not be allowed to tryout for the competition team.
Student expectations:
If you are looking for books to read this summer for fun or in preparation for the club below is the book list shared by HISD for 2025-2026. As you'll see the 3-5 list always includes most of the 2025-2026 Bluebonnet books which 3-5 graders will be reading at WUES this year anyway so what a great way to get a jump start on a success school year too!

Parent Support:
For both the PK-2 Book Club and the 3-5 Book Club, parental involvement is crucial to the success in the reading mission. We use a sign up genius to allow students/parents to sign up to present the books from the list to the group as part of our book clubs.

For the PK-2 Book Club, each student is required to have a caregiver attend meetings with them. Below is the PK-2 Name That Book Club schedule which might help you decide if this club is for your student! Additionally, please use this link to access the book presentation schedule. We are asking participants and their parent to sign up for only 1 book each to begin with to make sure everyone gets a chance to present.

The West University K-2 Name That Book team has won first or second place in the competition since 2013!
