Time commitments: We will have an initial Parent Informational Meeting, K-2 NTB Club will meet for 6 book discussions (Oct 26, Nov 2, Nov 9, Nov 16 and Dec 7) and a mock test (Nov 30). We will have tryouts for the final team selection on December 14.
All discussions and the mock tryout will be 3:30 to 4:30 pm on Zoom until a determination about safety of in-person meetings is made by HISD. Students should have a responsible adult with them for in-person activities per school guidelines.
What is the competition like?
Students in grades K-2 read the HISD published list of 30 books. This is available at https://www.houstonisd.org/Page/96206. The focus is on reading with memorizing, picture memory and comprehension. Multiple re-readings may be necessary. In the past, the competition occurred in February, where the selected student teams are placed together and presented with direct quotes or descriptions including picture descriptions. They are allowed 30 seconds to quietly discuss and present the book that represents the right answer. No speaking is allowed while answering and the students identify the correct book on an iPad containing all 30 book covers. This requires intense concentration and cooperation between team members with quiet, healthy discussions.
Student expectations:
Each student is expected to read all of the books and encouraged to write down and bring ten questions per book on the books they read. This can be direct quotes, settings or picture descriptions.
Parent Support:-Parental involvement is crucial to success in the reading mission.
The West University K-2 Name that Book team has won first place in the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020 and tied in 2016 competitions! They also finished 2nd in 2019.

A book club that helps prepare students for the district-wide Name That Book competition
School Library
TBD
Students read the 25 books on the Name That Book list, starting with the 20 Bluebonnet books, in order to prepare for the Name That Book competition in February. In December, a competition team of 6-8 students will be selected from the club members. During competition, quotes are read from the books and team members must work together to identify the book. Students are expected to read the books before coming to the meetings so that they can meaningfully contribute to the discussions. In addition, students are asked to bring five quotes from each book when they come to club meetings. Besides preparing for the NTB competition, the club members discuss prominent themes, examine similarities and differences between books, and participate in a variety of activities.
