CHESS CLUB
Who: 40 WUES students, grades K-5th
(20-student Competition Team & 20-student Development Class)
What: The Mustang Chess Club is back for another exciting year! Building on the success of last year’s expanded program, we’ll continue with 40 student members—20 in the Competition Team, representing WUES at local Scholastic Chess Tournaments, and 20 in the Development Class, aimed at sharpening skills and deepening understanding of the game.

When: TBD. Last year we held Chess Club from after dismissal to 4:15 P.M. on the third Wednesday and Thursday of each month. We hope to replicate this for the 2025/26 School Year. Chess Club will run from September through May.

How to Join: Interested students must complete the following interest form by August 31, 2025. A chance to sign up will be sent out shortly after to those who have registered their interest. Click here for the interest form!
Competition Team - By invitation and/or tryout
Development Class - First come, first served - the class will fill up very quickly!
Cost: $180 per student for the year (covers 9 monthly sessions)
Includes instruction by an experienced external chess coach.

Additional Info: Competition Team members are expected to participate in at least one Scholastic Chess Tournament per semester (tournaments are held on Saturdays and last approximately 8 hours).
Development Class members are welcome but not required to attend tournaments. Attendance at tournaments is encouraged to ensure future promotion to the Competition Team.
All Development Class participants should be at least advanced beginner level, meaning they can confidently play a full game from opening to endgame. Participants must have a genuine passion for chess and be motivated to improve their game.
Participants must commit to attend all 9 sessions throughout the school year.
