Service Projects

Service Project Program Goals:

  1. Help students learn and develop through active participation in carefully organized service experiences that meet actual community needs;
  2. Provide students with opportunities to use newly acquired skills and knowledge in real-life situations in their own communities; and
  3. Enhance what is taught in school by extending student learning beyond the classroom and into the community to foster the development of a sense of caring for others.

Service Projects for the 2007-2008 School Year:

January/ February Projects

From January 14 - 18, the PTO will sponsor a BLANKET DRIVE for a local non-profit group called SEARCH that provides services for the homeless.  The group has an informative website www.searchproject.org for anyone wishing to learn more.  Sadly, there are approximately 1,500 children living on the streets of Houston.  This group does mobile outreach, as well as a full spectrum of other services including day shelter, on-site housing, and job training.  It even has an accredited child care center exclusively serving homeless children called Tiny Treasures.  Please help us help SEARCH by donating clean/good condition blankets.

From January 28 - February 1, please help WUES score a touchdown in the Greater Houston Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive.  Please bring any of the items listed below to your classroom collection boxes during the week of the food drive.  The donations will benefit the Houston Food Bank and End Hunger Network.  It is important to note that 1 in 4 persons standing in a soup kitchen line is a child.

Suggested items (canned or plastic ONLY, no glass please):

Canned vegetables  Canned fruit  Canned pasta sauce
Peanut butter  Canned shelf stable juice  Canned soup
Canned nuts  Canned tomatoes  Canned jelly
Box dinners  Canned meat/seafood  Oatmeal/Pop tarts

April Service Project

Our final Service Project for the school year will take place next week, April 14-18th. *On Monday morning, April 14th, each student will receive a silicone bracelet that reads "West U. Elementary Cares" .

Please encourage your child to wear the bracelet each day next week as a visual reminder of this important Service Project!  We will be doing a 2 part project for Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Family Alliance.

Candlelighters is a non-profit charity organized to provide emotional, educational, and practical assistance to children with cancer and their families treated primarily at the Texas Medical Center.

Their website is: www.candle.org

  1. We will be collecting FINANCIAL DONATIONS of any amount for this organization.  The money we collect will help Candlelighters fund their many important programs and services.  Cash/checks made payable to Candlelighters can be given to your child's homeroom teacher throughout the week of April 14-18.
  2. We will collect TOILETRY BAGS that Candlelighters will give to families that come to the ER with sick children who are immediately hospitalized.  The families really appreciate having there essentials provided for them at such a stressful time!  There will be a collection bin for the toiletry kits on the stage in the cafeteria throughout the week of April 14-18. Please use quart sized zip lock type freezer bags and include the following basic toiletry items (new, unopened):
    1. Toothbrush/toothpaste
    2. Soap (can be liquid soap)
    3. Travel sized shampoo/conditioner bottles
    4.  Lotion
    5.  ** A note from your child that says something like:  "Made for you with Love from Alex from West U. Elementary School".  Please use first names only, no last names please.

Let's show Candlelighters how much West U. Elementary really does care!! Please contact Katie Hwu at Hwufamily@comcast.net with any questions..

Please look for more information in the Monday folders as the time for each project nears.  Thank you for your interest.
