Math Enrichment
WUES is fortunate to have not one, but two math clubs!
One is a coaching session for the Continental Math League contests offered to kids in grades 3-5. It is run by Ms. Symonette, one of the math ancillary teachers. Continental Math League (CML) meetings are Tuesdays after school.
The other club, Math Olympiad, is run by the PTO under the direction of Curriculum Enrichment chair, Michelle Bunch, with coaches Cheryl Mifflin (5th), Wendy Alexander (4th), Varsha Patel (3rd) and Veronica Sanchez (3rd). Math Olympiad is split into three grade level groups and focuses on problem-solving skills related to the Math Olympiad contests as well as math games, puzzles and number sense. Math Olympiad meetings are Thursdays after school. There are a few spots left in the 4th and 5th grade Math Olympiad Club.
Both CML and Math Olympiad contests are taken by the students during the school hours; however, the CML contests are administered to all WUES students, Grades 2-5, while the Math Olympiad contest are given only to club members, grades 4-5. The elementary Math Olympiad is the first level of math competition that ultimately leads to the US math team that attends the International Math Olympiad. Both clubs seek to foster confidence in problem-solving skills and a love of math.
